My First Impressions Of THIA Wellness Urban

After being welcomed into the space, I filled in a short form to list out what I’d hope to get out of my visit. I had built up a lot of tension in my shoulders and wasn’t getting enough sleep at night, so I was hoping to relieve some stress and leave feeling relaxed. Then, I sat down with my massage therapist, Lena, to pick out the essential oils that would be added to a base of sweet almond oil and used for my massage. I told her I enjoyed citrus scents and that I was having trouble sleeping, so she recommended a combination of grapefruit and camomile.

Before my massage, I asked for a quick tour. It was surprisingly spacious (I was told it doubles as a yoga and meditation studio). The rooms, divided by heavyweight curtains, were dimly lit and cosy. I especially loved that each room featured a unique piece of art (painted by the owner’s father), which gave each space its own personality. There is also an open-air urban garden space out back, where guests can relax after their treatment with a cup of tea (or Sparkling Wine upon request!).

The THIA Signature Massage

THIA Wellness recently partnered with award-winning Japanese skincare brand Lapidem, so I wanted to try the Lapidem Facial ($1,100) and THIA Signature Massage ($1,000). The bed was heated and the sheets were soft and fluffy; this immediately got me to relax right before we got started. Lena was very diligent in making sure that the pressure was to my liking throughout my massage.

I requested that she pay special attention to my shoulders, where I had accumulated a lot of tension (it didn’t help that I have terrible posture and am notoriously known to always be carrying a heavy tote). Lena agreed that my shoulders were indeed very tight; I almost felt bad about how much effort she had to put into ironing out all the knots. Slowly but surely, the tension from my body melted away. Lena was extremely gentle but knew where a little more pressure was needed. The 60-minute massage felt twice as long, which is always a good thing.

The THIA Wellness x Lapidem Facial

Next, time for my facial! This felt nothing short of a luxurious affair. With Lena’s whisper of a touch, even the process of removing my makeup was a soothing experience. Once my face was clean, she applied a gentle and natural konjac exfoliant and buffed any dead skin cells away in small circular motions.

My favourite part came next. After wiping off the facial scrub, she applied Lapidem’s Body Cell Cream which, to my delight, had the scent of another citrus fruit, yuzu. She worked the product into my skin with ice globes, a special glass massage tool that’s filled with water (usually kept in a freezer or cooler before the treatment).

The icy touch was startling at first but the experience was overall quite sublime. The sensation of the cold globes gliding over my face was incredibly relaxing but also felt like my skin was waking up. As we gave the product some time to sink in, I was given a bonus head and shoulder massage — my cue to accept the nearing end of my time at THIA Wellness.

Common areas of treatment tend to be the under eye and lips, though many clients have also used AestheFill as a non-surgical way to straighten out any bumps on the nose. The treatment starts at $12,000 and results typically last between six and nine months.

Lastly, High Society is one of the few clinics to provide Belotero, another filler treatment, used to add volume to the cheek area or lips (lip augmentation). Priced from $4,800, it can also be used to reduce the look of perioral rhytids (a wrinkle in the skin in the area surrounding your mouth) or nasolabial folds (your “smile lines”, a line extending from your nose down towards your mouth).

The team tells us that clients can see up to nine months of correction for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds through this treatment.

What Is The LPG Endermologie Beauty Treatment?

First things first, what is LPG Emdermologie? Also known as emdermologie, this cutting-edge technology is used to firm the skin and in body contouring. It uses a machine equipped with a roller and suction device to gently manipulate your skin and underlying tissues. This mechanical stimulation of cells is called endermologie. By targeting different areas of your body and face, where you might have stubborn fat, loose skin or cellulite — like we all do — it helps to tone and reduce double chin! The best part is it’s all achieved non-invasive.

How Does LPG Work?

The patented technology involves the massaging action of the roller and suction, which work together to knead and fold the skin. This motion activates your body’s natural processes of fat releases.

The gentle mechanical stimulation can also trigger collagen and elastin production. These are proteins that contribute to skin elasticity and firmness, giving your skin a firmer, brighter and smoother look.

How Was Team Sassy’s LPG Treatment?

Our treatment comprised a 30-minute LPG Endermologie session for the body and 30 minutes for the face. Before it starts, we are asked to put on a white bodysuit that ensures proper movement of the machine’s rollers. Then we lay on a fluffy spa bed (ideal for daydreaming) as a trained technician switches on the machine, with a handheld device equipped with rollers and a suction mechanism. This gadget will be applied to my body and face.

LPG Endermologie For The Body

The treatment starts with a roller that stimulates the body, with a focus on areas where stubborn fat tends to accumulate, like the belly and thighs. Your skin is softly lifted and folded by the rollers, in a kneading motion; a gentle massage with the added sensation of suction. This combined action allows the technology to act directly on the adipocytes existing in our hypodermis, aka the slimming cells.

LPG Endermologie For The Face

After the body treatment, the technician switches to a much smaller device for the face. It featured a similar rolling and suction sensation but with less pressure. The motorised flaps encourage the natural production of essential chemicals good for your skin. This cell stimulation causes fibroblasts – renewing cells – to create more hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin – the substances that naturally give our skin its volume and hydration, as well as reducing wrinkles.

Final Thoughts

While we feel firmer skin right after the treatment, the clinic recommends having multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. According to the staff, hyaluronic acid levels are increased by 80 percent following a Face Endermologie treatment, and wrinkles are reduced by 87 percent. Collagen network appearance grew 240 percent after 20 sessions of Face Endermologie.

Infused with 100 percent natural essential oils, Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir is Hong Kong’s number one all-in-one mist toner. I was drawn to this as I’m a mom of two with not a lot of time for skincare (I’d say I have around five minutes in the morning and evening). An all-in-one mist toner with multiple benefits, it’s easily one of my favourite products. I’ve been using it for more than a week now and I can definitely see that my skin is brighter, moisturised and more refreshed after each use. It’s lightweight, non-greasy and super easy to use too — just a few spritzes!

I noticed a significant reduction in redness and I like how it smells fresh, like cucumber water. Plus, I love how you can use it under your night cream to add an extra level and layer of moisture.

Resveratrol-lift Firming Night Cream, $450

Let me tell you, this firming night cream is a total game-changer! The combination of resveratrol, hyaluronic acid, and vegan collagen booster worked wonders on my skin. When I wake up in the morning, my skin looks more rested and rejuvenated, and my complexion is noticeably more radiant. The cream also helped smooth out wrinkles and makes my skin feel firmer. But what’s really great about this cream is that it’s made up of more than 98 percent natural origin ingredients and enriched with olive squalane, which really helped nourish my dry skin and leave it feeling soothed. The cream has a soft and rich texture that felt luxurious on my skin.

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that Hong Kong’s high humidity levels are no joke. This sweltering city is met with unbearable humidity nine months a year and soaring temperatures (climate change is very real!) that have us desperate to be wearing as little as possible, making as little movement as possible, all while parked by an AC. That’s why we’ve put together this ultimate guide to beating the heat with tried-and-tested beauty tips, as well as our favourite products to deal with Hong Kong’s humidity and keep cool all summer long.

Switch To A Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser

As we move from colder, drier weather into that sticky-hot, sweaty heat — it might be time to swap some of your basics! This includes your gentle lightweight cleanser, that you use morning and night. In summer, you might want to switch to something a little stronger, to remove the dust particles, pollutants and dirt that accumulate on your face both overnight and throughout the day.

In particular, a face wash with a chemical exfoliant (we’d stay away from physical scrubs on the face!) like a beta-hydroxy acid, alpha hydroxy acid or polyhydroxy acid (BHA, AHA or PHA) will help your skin shed dead cells, stop build-up, reduce your sebum production and keep your pores clear. If your skin is more sensitive or new to chemical exfoliants, we’d suggest starting with a cleanser that incorporates a weaker acid.

Reach For Products With Oil-Controlling Ingredients Like Kaolin Clay or Charcoal

To stop the feel of greasy skin and the look of excess shine, reach for sebum-controlling products. Try charcoal or kaolin clay-infused wash-0ff masks that absorb excess oil on your skin and draw out impurities (like dirt or grease) from your pores. Routine masking will help you keep your skin balanced and help regulate your oil-moisture levels.

In terms of makeup, this is the time to look to mattifying primers, powders and setting sprays!

Don’t Forget To Moisturise!

No matter what the weather is like in Hong Kong, make sure to moisturise your skin to lock in hydration and create a protective layer against harmful external factors. What Is Humidity And What Does It Do To Our Skin?

Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour around you, so high humidity means significant moisture levels in the air. This does a number of things including not allowing sweat to evaporate, which leaves your body feeling hot and sticky. To cool off, you have to work harder — which means even more sweat and respiration.

High humidity also forces your pores to expand, opening up and collecting dirt and other fine particles that fly in. Think of this as nature’s sauna but, unfortunately, a more polluted version.

Your skin might even increase its sebum production in high humidity. The term sebum is used for that oily, waxy substance produced by your body’s sebaceous glands. It coats your skin and actually helps to moisturise and protect, but too much of it is what leads to that feeling of “oily skin” and the look of excess shine. And, excess sebum can lead to congestion and blocking of your pores.

Basically, Hong Kong’s humid conditions lead to skin congestion, as a mixture of sweat, dust and pollutants builds up, leading to potential heat rashes, clogged pores, and inevitable acne and breakouts.
