First things first, what is LPG Emdermologie? Also known as emdermologie, this cutting-edge technology is used to firm the skin and in body contouring. It uses a machine equipped with a roller and suction device to gently manipulate your skin and underlying tissues. This mechanical stimulation of cells is called endermologie. By targeting different areas of your body and face, where you might have stubborn fat, loose skin or cellulite — like we all do — it helps to tone and reduce double chin! The best part is it’s all achieved non-invasive.

How Does LPG Work?

The patented technology involves the massaging action of the roller and suction, which work together to knead and fold the skin. This motion activates your body’s natural processes of fat releases. 

The gentle mechanical stimulation can also trigger collagen and elastin production. These are proteins that contribute to skin elasticity and firmness, giving your skin a firmer, brighter and smoother look.

How Was Team Sassy’s LPG Treatment?

Our treatment comprised a 30-minute LPG Endermologie session for the body and 30 minutes for the face. Before it starts, we are asked to put on a white bodysuit that ensures proper movement of the machine’s rollers. Then we lay on a fluffy spa bed (ideal for daydreaming) as a trained technician switches on the machine, with a handheld device equipped with rollers and a suction mechanism. This gadget will be applied to my body and face.

LPG Endermologie For The Body

The treatment starts with a roller that stimulates the body, with a focus on areas where stubborn fat tends to accumulate, like the belly and thighs. Your skin is softly lifted and folded by the rollers, in a  kneading motion; a gentle massage with the added sensation of suction. This combined action allows the technology to act directly on the adipocytes existing in our hypodermis, aka the slimming cells.

LPG Endermologie For The Face

After the body treatment, the technician switches to a much smaller device for the face. It featured a similar rolling and suction sensation but with less  pressure. The motorised flaps encourage the natural production of essential chemicals good for your skin. This cell stimulation causes fibroblasts – renewing cells – to create more hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin – the substances that naturally give our skin its volume and hydration, as well as reducing wrinkles.

Final Thoughts

While we feel firmer skin right after the treatment, the clinic recommends having multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. According to the staff, hyaluronic acid levels are increased by 80 percent following a Face Endermologie treatment, and wrinkles are reduced by 87 percent. Collagen network appearance grew 240 percent after 20 sessions of Face Endermologie.

Let me tell you, this firming night cream is a total game-changer! The combination of resveratrol, hyaluronic acid, and vegan collagen booster worked wonders on my skin. When I wake up in the morning, my skin looks more rested and rejuvenated, and my complexion is noticeably more radiant. The cream also helped smooth out wrinkles and makes my skin feel firmer. But what’s really great about this cream is that it’s made up of more than 98 percent natural origin ingredients and enriched with olive squalane, which really helped nourish my dry skin and leave it feeling soothed. The cream has a soft and rich texture that felt luxurious on my skin.

I love clay masks because they leave my skin feeling smooth. This detox mask was no exception! Switch To A Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser

As we move from colder, drier weather into that sticky-hot, sweaty heat — it might be time to swap some of your basics! This includes your gentle lightweight cleanser, that you use morning and night. In summer, you might want to switch to something a little stronger, to remove the dust particles, pollutants and dirt that accumulate on your face both overnight and throughout the day.

In particular, a face wash with a chemical exfoliant (we’d stay away from physical scrubs on the face!) like a beta-hydroxy acid, alpha hydroxy acid or polyhydroxy acid (BHA, AHA or PHA) will help your skin shed dead cells, stop build-up, reduce your sebum production and keep your pores clear. If your skin is more sensitive or new to chemical exfoliants, we’d suggest starting with a cleanser that incorporates a weaker acid.

Reach For Products With Oil-Controlling Ingredients Like Kaolin Clay or Charcoal

To stop the feel of greasy skin and the look of excess shine, reach for sebum-controlling products. Routine masking will help you keep your skin balanced and help regulate your oil-moisture levels.

What Is Humidity And What Does It Do To Our Skin?

Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour around you, so high humidity means significant moisture levels in the air. This does a number of things including not allowing sweat to evaporate, which leaves your body feeling hot and sticky. To cool off, you have to work harder — which means even more sweat and respiration.

High humidity also forces your pores to expand, opening up and collecting dirt and other fine particles that fly in. Think of this as nature’s sauna but, unfortunately, a more polluted version.

Your skin might even increase its sebum production in high humidity. The term sebum is used for that oily, waxy substance produced by your body’s sebaceous glands. It coats your skin and actually helps to moisturise and protect, but too much of it is what leads to that feeling of “oily skin” and the look of excess shine. And, excess sebum can lead to congestion and blocking of your pores.

Basically, Hong Kong’s humid conditions lead to skin congestion, as a mixture of sweat, dust and pollutants builds up, leading to potential heat rashes, clogged pores, and inevitable acne and breakouts.

Whether it’s junk boat parties, lazy beach days, hiking adventures, or simply dashing through the city in the scorching heat, your skin sure cops it during the warmer months! SkinCentral, a leading Hong Kong cosmetic and medical dermatology clinic, has been helping Sassy Girls keep their skin in top condition since 2005. We sat down with SkinCentral’s team of professionals to ask all our burning questions about skin safety.

SPF 15, 30, 50? What’s the difference and what should we look for in a sunscreen? Is it ok to rely on SPF in our make-up?

SPF stands for sun protection factor. It measures how well the sunscreen can protect you from UVB. It represents how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to produce sunburn on protected skin (in the presence of sunscreen!) relative to the amount of solar energy required to produce sunburn on unprotected skin.

It is commonly believed that SPF is a time factor for sun exposure. Actually, SPF does not inform consumers about the time that can be spent in the sun without getting sunburned.

It is used to compare the level of sunburn protection provided by different sunscreens. In simple terms, SPF 50 provides better protection than SPF 30.

You can not just rely on the SPF in the make-up. Theoretically, for sunscreen to have a protective effect, you need to apply an adequate amount, a thick layer over the skin. The content of SPF in makeup is simply not high enough.

You’d need to put on tons of makeup in order to provide the adequate protection that regular sunscreen would provide.

Help…. I forgot to reapply my sunscreen and now I look like a glowing red beacon. Is there anything I can do?

In the hours and days following you can:

• Take cool baths or showers to relieve the pain
• Gently pat dry and apply a layer of moisturizer
• Drink plenty of water to cool down and prevent dehydration
• Do not pop the blisters
• Take painkillers
• Cover sunburnt skin from direct sunlight until the skin has fully healed

The long-term effects of sunburn include premature ageing, precancerous skin lesions (actinic keratosis) and the increased risk of skin cancer, including both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. These effects could take decades to develop and the only thing you can do is to avoid further sunburn and sun damage.

Who is more at risk of developing skin cancer?

Factors that affect your risk of developing skin cancer include genetics, skin type (especially fair-skinned people), sun exposure and a history of sunburn and those undergoing immuno-suppressive treatment are generally at higher risk for skin cancer. But that doesn’t mean we all shouldn’t be taking precautions!

Skin cancer is more likely to develop in areas of skin exposed to the sun which includes the scalp, face, neck, nose, chest, arms and hands.

It’s important not to get complacent as non sun-exposed areas like your palms, fingernails, toenails or even your genital areas have been known to develop skin cancers. For people with darker skin tones, melanoma is actually more likely to occur in these areas which are not normally exposed to the sun.

What are some of the warning signs we should look out for?

Dermatologists usually look out for:

• Changes to the size, shape, structure or colour of a naevus (commonly called moles)
• Particular naevus that looks different from others on the body
• A new naevus developing in adult life (over the age of 40)
• ABCD characteristics — Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter > 6 mm

Who should book a skin cancer check?

Skin safety is important for everyone! If you’ve never had a check, or it’s been a long time since your last skin exam you might want to consider visiting a dermatologist to establish your baseline. Some people should be booking in for regular checks, dermoscopy or biopsy and that includes those with; many moles (more than 100), large moles (especially if they are unusually coloured or shaped), moles that are difficult to see and monitor (like on your back), a personal or family history of melanoma and those with a history of severe or repeated sunburn.

So, the question we all want to know — how much time in the sun is too much?

The time taken to have sunburn depends on several factors. It can vary by skin type, the weather and the time of day. On a hot sunny day, if you have fair skin, it could take just 5 minutes to start getting sunburn!

What is the one piece of advice you’d give to women to stay skin-safe this summer?

Prevention is the best thing you can do to save your skin.

Cover up by wearing a hat, long sleeves and a long skirt or trousers. Choose fabrics designed for the sun (UPF 40+) when outdoors.

Wear sunscreen! Choose a broad-spectrum high-protection (SPF 50+) sunscreen and apply it frequently to exposed areas.

What To Consider About Reef-Safe Sunscreen And The Sea

It’s a known fact that UV rays and sun exposure can cause sunburn, premature ageing and, worst yet, skin cancer; but we have to acknowledge that while we need to stay safe, our choice of sunscreen could be harming the environment in a big way. The numbers say it all: 14,000 tons of sunscreen are thought to wash into the oceans each year, while up to 82,000 chemicals from personal-care products may be tainting the seas.¹ These toxic ingredients not only lead to coral bleaching and the destruction of our reefs but can also detrimentally affect marine life.

So, what can we do about it? While there are many enemies of reefs (plastic pollution and sewage to name but a few), our choice of sunscreen is one factor that we can completely control, and immediately! Luckily, scientific advances have made it possible for us to opt for “reef-friendly” or reef-safe sunscreen and SPF products, which use physical UVA and UVB filters as opposed to harmful chemical ones.

How Do I Know If My SPF Is A Reef-Safe Sunscreen?

It’s important to note that the terms reef-safe and reef-friendly are not regulated, so you can’t always trust products with this description. A safer bet is to take a long, hard look at the ingredients list, and make sure to avoid sunscreen and sunblock² that contains the following:

1. Products which contain petrolatum (commonly known as mineral oil), which is harmful, even fatal, to marine life and birds. It takes years to biodegrade.
2. Oxybenzone, octinoxate, butylparaben and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, which cause coral bleaching.³

While we can only hope that more countries will follow in Hawaii’s footsteps and pass a bill to ban sunscreen and sunblock that can harm coral reefs, as individuals we all have the power to make small changes by switching to products that don’t contain harmful ingredients. What’s the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?

Your sweat itself doesn’t have a bad odour — until it mixes with bacteria on your skin. Deodorants and antiperspirants work in different ways to mask or prevent this bad smell.

• Deodorants block or mask body odour with a presumably more pleasant scent. They may also create a more acidic environment where applied, which may prevent the bacteria from releasing odours.
• Antiperspirants use ingredients, usually aluminium-based, to block sweat glands, reducing the amount of perspiration released.

The Pros: It’s All-Natural!

These deodorants are all-natural and botanical-based, which means they should be free of any excessive and unnecessary chemicals. Instead, ingredients like charcoal, mineral-rich clays and plant-based butters and oils promise to be gentler on the skin.

It’s worth noting there is no substantial scientific evidence to support the claim that aluminium-based antiperspirants may increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

The Pros: It’s Environmentally-Friendly

Some traditional formulas contain the antimicrobial agent triclosan, which accumulates in our rivers and streams after being washed from our bodies. This may negatively impact the environment (and us, although there is no clear evidence at present). What is clearer, however, is that antiperspirants tend to come in non-recyclable and non-refillable packaging.

The Cons: Your Body May Need Time To Adjust

If your underarms are used to regular-strength antiperspirants, changing to natural, simpler products could come with a detox journey. With no aluminium compound to “plug” your sweat glands, they’ll be exposed again. You may experience a seemingly substantial increase in the growth of odour-causing bacteria and excessive sweating — but these levels should normalise and your underarms should fully adjust.

The Cons: It Takes A Little Trial And Error

There’s now a wide range of natural alternatives on the market, coming in various formulas and with different ingredients. This means it can be a little bit of a hassle to find one that truly is for you — what works for one person may not work for everyone! Take some time to experiment and test the options available.

As someone who’s suffered from adult acne and relentless allergic reactions, my skincare routine is something I’ve worked hard to streamline and perfect (to an extent!). Of course, everyone’s skin and skin needs are different — and I always love learning about routines packed full of soothing, hydrating ingredients and holy grail star products. Keep reading to get a look at my simple daily skincare routine, from cleanser to SPF — free of synthetic added fragrances and essential oils that may be too potent for hyper-sensitive skin like my own.

Some Background On My Sensitive Skin

My skin in June 2019. I just have product in my eyebrows (it was really hard to find a no-makeup selfie!). You can even see a little pimple patch sticker!

I’d describe my skin as reactive — previously acne-prone (especially hormonal!) and genetically sensitive with allergies and ingredient sensitivities. I had bouts of spotty skin throughout secondary school but my skin got worse after coming off hormonal birth control (prescribed for painful periods). I started suffering from red, angry and ever-persistent acne in 2016 that would only slightly decrease with the use of AHA and BHAs¹, especially glycolic acid and salicylic acid.

As my skin got worse, I had to start building a skincare routine and paying attention to the ingredients. I soon learnt double cleansing made a huge difference, that hydrating and soothing products were necessary to pair with my more aggressive chemical exfoliants and that I had sensitivities to higher doses of niacinamide.

Then in 2022, I realised my sensitivity to mandarin peel essential oil was definitely an allergy to citrus essential oils, after a horrible two-month-long all-over body reaction — hives! After doing an allergy patch test with my immunologist, we narrowed down some ingredients and my condition: chronic spontaneous urticaria.

All this just meant simplifying my skincare routine down to being as gentle yet effective as possible. I also prefer more affordable products but skincare can totally be a luxurious and indulgent self-care activity! While my skin is never going to be perfect (poreless, single-tone complexion is perhaps the stuff of dreams!), I’m able to look in the mirror and feel pleased with its current state and how much progress I’ve made in the last few years.

AM — Morning Skincare Routine

Water-Based Cleanser: Beauty of Joseon – Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser

I’ve cycled through many, many face washes (from foaming ones to milks and oils) and my current pick has been my go-to for about a year now. This no-nonsense gel-type face wash is non-drying and bouncy, with natural extracts from plum and mung bean for gentle exfoliation and hydration. I like how it leaves my face feeling clean, but not stripped and tight. It’s free of essential oils and added fragrance. The affordable price tag’s a nice bonus too.

Hydrating Toner: I’m from – Rice Toner

I love a milky hydrating toner, and this one from I’m from has been my holy grail for three years! Infused with 77.78% goami rice extracts for anti-wrinkle, brightening and moisturising benefits, it also contains nourishing rice bran and anti-acne niacinamide that provides a little exfoliation. Although marketed for dry skin, I find that it’s super lightweight and that my skin drinks it up. A little pricier than I’d like for a bottle I go through very quickly (and one my skin misses when I take out of rotation), so I try to shop during sales. Fragrance and essential oil free.

Nourishing Toner/Serum: COSRX – Full Fit Propolis Synergy Toner

Although this is a toner, I’d count this as a serum and/or essence step. I like the product after my hydrating toner to be something anti-acne; my skin can only take so much niacinamide and I’ve dialled back on harsher ingredients like tea tree, benzoyl peroxide and AHA/BHAs (although I liked all of these when my skin was breaking out!). I actually think snail mucin is a good option but the ingredient I’ve really enjoyed is propolis — a honey-like substance with promising anti-inflammatory and healing benefits that fights bacteria and fungi. This viscous toner pick is packed with 72% of black propolis extract and absorbs quicks into the skin. It’s fragrance and essential oil free.

Moisturiser: Rovectin Clean – Lotus Water Cream

For a long time, I was using the Balancium Comfort Ceramide Cream by COSRX (which is still my absolute favourite moisturiser!) but after my allergic reaction last year, I’ve tried my best to phase out products with any essential oils. I know this one by Rovectin is completely free of artificial fragrances and colourants, essential oils, mineral oils and alcohol, and is also vegan and cruelty-free. It’s a lightweight water cream with lotus water extract, perfect to use in both summer and winter, in humid and drier climates. A great all-rounder.

SPF: Canmake – Mermaid Skin Gel UV 01 Clear

This is like an alcohol and fragrance-free version of the Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence, with that same silky smooth gel feel and minimal white cast. I absolutely love this sunscreen, it’s affordable and offers the strongest sun protection rating in Japan’s beauty industry (SPF50+ and PA++++), and it absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving a supple look and slight shine that goes away as it dries down. Of course, there are a lot of great Japanese and Korean options out there; this is just the one I feel suits my skin best. You can get it in-store at any Watsons, Sasa, and Japanese mart (like @cosme and Matsumoto Kiyoshi) as well as online. Make sure to get 01 Clear and not a tinted version.

PM — Evening Skincare Routine

Oil-Based Cleanser: Beauty of Joseon – Radiance Cleansing Balm

In 2016, I started to use a cleansing balm to remove makeup. That is until I joined a POC Skincare group on Facebook and decided to try out double cleansing — where you use an oil-based cleanser in the evenings if you’ve been out all day and are wearing sunscreen and makeup and follow it with a water-based cleanser. I was a firm Banila cleansing balms girl for about six(!) years but I started the hunt last year for something similar, at the same price point, without any added fragrance or essential oils. This one by Beauty of Joseon is my preferred formula, a melting balm that emulsifies beautifully and removes all my stubborn makeup.

Then I simply repeat my morning routine, leaving out sun protection!

Other Products On My Skincare Shelf

I like the idea of intuitive skincare, where you listen to your skin and use products based on need rather than sticking to a super rigid routine. I keep an eye cream and lip treatment on my shelf when I feel up to using it, as well as castor oil for my eyebrows.

In case of a breakout, I have tea tree oil to disinfect, benzoyl peroxide for stubborn under-the-skin spots without a head and pimple patches at the ready for any that I need to calm down.

I also keep a chemical exfoliant on hand for more humid, summer days and a skin-soothing serum in case of inflamed skin (due to medication, after an allergic reaction or illness for example). I also have a retinal night cream and a kombucha essence that I’ll hopefully start trialling soon!
