Team Sassy gets inspired in the kitchen with healthy food picks from new online marketplace Gourmet Rebels…

Many of us set the intention to lead more balanced, healthier lifestyles but it’s a lot easier said than done. So, you can imagine our excitement when newly launched Gourmet Rebels entered the scene. This online market prides itself on bringing a carefully curated selection (approved by renowned dietitian Sylvia Lam!) of pantry staples, snacks, supplements and more to our fingertips, while highlighting sustainable, ethical and family-owned brands from around the world.

The range of ready-to-use ingredients was just too good to resist; so much so that our art director and home culinarian Joy was inspired to cook up a storm using some products from the site. Read on to see what she whipped up in the kitchen and for some easy weeknight dinner ideas

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Artichoke Hearts In Herb Marinade

One of the tastiest (and easiest!) ways to eat artichoke hearts is out of a jar. This paired well with the starter I prepared (below). The marinated artichoke hearts from Organico were tender and the herb oil was infused with a mixture of basil, parsley and red chilli pepper that rounded out the artichoke’s nutty, earthy flavour. They can be eaten straight out of the jar or even cooked with a lemon garlic linguine pasta dish.

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Beer Jelly & Cheese On Za’atar Keto Protein Bites

MANFOOD’s beer jelly has a delightful jelly-like consistency that is more firm than jam spreads. Its sweet, citrusy and subtle strawberry flavour paired well with the bold and creamy blue brie I had at home. I placed the cheese and Beer Jelly on top of some za’atar-flavoured keto protein bites from Eva Bold, which added a nice layer of crunch and balanced the fruitiness of the jelly. This bite-sized starter was super easy to pull together and is great to serve at a last-minute dinner party.

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Vegetable Couscous Salad With Piccalilli, Sardines & Cherry Tomatoes

Already packed with lemon and olive oil, the sustainably fished sardines from Fish4Ever provided a zesty, bright flavour and meaty texture to the piccalilli’s pickled garden vegetables. Organico’s Vegetable Cous Cous was cooked in 8 minutes, fluffed with a fork, and brought a warm fragrance to the dish that felt like a hug. The diced courgettes, peppers and carrots that came mixed into the couscous tasted delicious alongside the tangy and crunchy piccalilli from MANFOOD.

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Butternut Squash And Ricotta Pasta

The crema di zucca, or butternut squash purée, from Bio Orto was rich and creamy, and softened into a smooth sauce in the pan. Once I mixed in the cooked spaghetti and olive oil, the simple, hearty and wholesome dish instantly came together. I topped it off with some toasted pumpkin seeds and ricotta, which added depth and crunch to the buttery smooth pasta. This was my favourite dish for its simplicity and rich flavour!

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Baked Pesto Salmon

Another staple weeknight dish is salmon seasoned with salt and pepper and baked in the oven at 200ºC for 12-15 minutes. This time, I layered on the kale pesto from Bio Orto halfway and returned it to the oven. The pesto brought a nutty and vibrant garlic flavour to the smoky salmon fillets. Packed with olive oil, the pesto also helped the fillets stay juicy while baking so that they came out perfectly tender and flaky.

A Team Sassy favourite, NOSH is our go-to for easy healthy meals on the go — now, the brand is offering nutritious snack swaps to help you cut sugar cravings and keep you full!

What do we want? Healthy meals! When do we want it? At our doorstep first thing in the morning! Team Sassy has tried and tested NOSH’s meal plans, which are all dietitian-approved and made to suit different preferences, nutrition goals and dietary requirements, without skimping on taste or indulgence.

An obstacle to healthier eating is often snacking. How often do you finish a day of nutritious, relatively well-balanced meals only to reach out for a too-sweet bag of sugary treats? We’ve been there. But thanks to NOSH Direct, you can have your snack and eat it too, be it a Champagne-flavoured chocolate bar, fizzy cola gummies or Peking duck-flavoured chips

Meal Plans Backed By An Expert Dietitian

Heading to a nutritionist in Hong Kong isn’t in the cards for everyone, especially given its hefty price tag. NOSH does the work for you, providing meal plans backed by expert dietician Sylvia Lam who has more than 20 years of dietetic experience in Hong Kong, focusing on helping people to eat for wellness and weight management.

“People tend to pre-packaged processed foods due to convenience but they’re low in nutrients and contain unnecessary fat. NOSH’s meals remain tasty and nutritious as we use wholefoods – ingredients that have been processed or refined as little as possible and are free from additives or other artificial substances” – Slyvia

The fuss-free meal plans can be customised to suit everyone from vegetarians to flexitarians, those on a keto diet and more, as well as being specifically dedicated to our favourite foods (we love our pasta!)

NOSH Direct

Why Choose NOSH?

With over two million healthy meal plans delivered since launching, NOSH is clearly a crowd favourite! What sets it apart from the rest? “We use all kinds of fresh ingredients, including whole grains, high-quality protein, a wide range of colourful vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices when creating their meals. Our meals can help achieve individualised goals and if you want some insight on which meal suits you best, simply raise your questions and concerns to me,” Slyvia.

Plus, eating healthy is also tied to better habits for the planet — all of NOSH’s packaging are eco-friendly and biodegradable (decomposing in 51 days in a landfill, to be precise!)

NOSH Direct

Enter NOSH Direct — Healthy And Guilt-Free Snack Swaps

The NOSH family is growing and now provides exclusive and curated health and wellness products sourced directly from the UK, Europe and the US. Focusing on helping you make within-reach sensible swaps instead of asking you to cut out your favourite foods completely, you’ll be able to shop everything from breakfast food to sweet treats, dairy-free milk, chips, health supplements and more.

You can also easily filter through your needs, whether they’re keto-friendly, vegan, organic or gluten-free – simply add all to cart and have it delivered right to your doorstep.

So What Exactly Are The Healthy Swaps?

If you have a sugar craving after a meal — you’re not alone! Swap your usual supermarket bar chocolate for Love Cocoa’s sugar-free bites (where a tree is planted for every purchase of a bar!) or Ask Mummy & Daddy’s vegan and naturally-flavoured gummies.

NOSH Direct

Our office usually has a bag of chips or two (to share!). We’d swap a supermarket-processed brand for SHORE’s high-fibre chips or Eva Bold’s keto-friendly protein bars (just what you need in the middle of the day).

NOSH Direct is constantly adding new health-conscious brands to its platform so keep your eyes peeled for more!

From GNC and NOW Foods to Fanda Pharmacy, iHerb and more, here are the best vitamins and supplements stores in Hong Kong.

We’re firm advocates of eating well-balanced, nutritious meals but there are times when an additional boost of vitamins and minerals is not just helpful but required! It pays to know what type of health supplements are useful — like probiotics when your gut’s been disrupted by illness or medicine, collagen when you’ve had a physical injury or surgery, magnesium for sleep or even women’s multivitamins and inositol for PCOS/PCOD — and where to buy them. Here are the best vitamins and supplement stores in Hong Kong.

Wondering what the ban on CBD in Hong Kong means for CBD users? Can you still use CBD in the city? Here’s everything you need to know.

CBD certainly became a buzz word in the city as the hip new natural cure to anxiety, depression, insomnia, eczema and more. We saw it in our coffee, beer, hand creams and even workout leggings! But alas, the cannabinoid product compound is set to be banned in Hong Kong starting Wednesday, 1 February, 2023.

With the impending ban on CBD in Hong Kong, we’ve seen the closure of a number of local cafes offering CBD-infused food and drink like Found, and other physical shops and online business selling CBD products. Hong Kong residents were given three months from Thursday, 27 October to dispose of their CBD products in disposal bins placed around the city. Read on to find out more…

What Is CBD?

Best CBD oil Hong Kong: CBD stores, what is CBD

Is CBD Legal In Hong Kong?

As of Wednesday, 1 February, 2023, CBD will officially be banned in Hong Kong. The cannabis-derived substance will be prohibited under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and as such, possession and consumption of CBD will be subject to up to 7 years’ imprisonment and a $1 million fine.

The transporting of CBD for sale (including both import and export), will also be illegal.

What Is CBD?

CBD is one of the 104 known compounds in the cannabinoids group. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not have any psychoactive effects. This means that CBD won’t make you “high”. The oil is made from different parts of a mature hemp plant (everything from its stalks to its flowers).

Is CBD The Same As Cannabis?

No, CBD is not the same as cannabis or marijuana. Though both come from the same family, the two plants they originate from are very different.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD works through the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in our body to generate encocannabinoids and process phytocannabinoids. This helps us return to homeostasis (which is the stable norm we’re constantly ebbing and flowing from). CBD combines with the body to adjust our stress response. It’s known as an adaptogen because it adapts uniquely to you.

Looking to fill up on plant-based delights? Check out our guide to vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Hong Kong.

If you’re leaning towards eating less meat, or considering what it means to be vegetarian or vegan in Hong Kong, it’s worth knowing that this shift could be the single biggest way you as an individual can reduce your impact on the planet. Each day, a person who eats a vegan diet “saves 1,100 gallons of water, 45 pounds of grain, 30 square-foot of forested land, 20-pounds CO2 equivalent and one animal’s life”. And the cherry on the (plant-based) cake is that you don’t have to compromise on taste to align with your values. From traditional dim sum to comfort eats and insta-friendly cafe bites, these miss-meat-not vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Hong Kong prove you can go plant-based without sacrificing on flavour…

After the rollercoaster ride that was 2022, who would say no to a stay at The Farm at San Benito?

Imagining a weekend of relaxing by the pool, maybe a yoga class and massage in a lovely resort in the Philippines, I was quick to say yes to a quick trip to The Farm at San Benito. A bit of time out to set the tone for the new year ahead. Without wanting to sound too dramatic about it, The Farm at San Benito was so much more…

I love a spot of yoga and will never say no to a good spa treatment. However, when it comes to crystals and chakras, juice detoxes and vegan living, I’m a bit more sceptical. But I’ll try anything once! The beauty of a stay at The Farm at San Benito is there is something for everyone’s interpretation of wellness. There are options for those seeking a complete lifestyle overhaul and those who want a simple holiday retreat with healthy food, relaxation and mindfulness and fitness.

What is The Farm at San Benito?

More than just a lovely tropical resort (although it is definitely that too!), The Farm is a complete holistic lifestyle destination. There are onsite yoga, fitness and wellness classes and a luxurious spa, as well as a holistic medical centre all just a 90-minute drive from Manila International Airport. Easy reach for a quick getaway from Hong Kong.

Wellness At The Holistic Sanctuary

What sets this destination apart is the Holistic Sanctuary, a medical centre that offers everything from general consultations, nutritional advice and digestive cleanses supervised by a team of onsite doctors to physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and reiki, psychology and psychoemotional healing. There are programmes and packages covering all sorts of health issues including long Covid recovery, sleep induction, stress reduction and hormonal balance.

The options can seem quite overwhelming, but at the heart of each package is a personalised, medically supervised treatment plan. The helpful team will guide you through the options and help build your perfect retreat.

Tested Treatments At The Holistic Sanctuary

My treatments started with the Live Blood Analysis which involved a finger prick blood droplet being examined under a microscope. While not diagnostic, it was interesting to see the blood cells interact giving insight and direction to other health conversations.

This was followed by a Voice Analysis where I spoke into a microphone for around a minute, followed by the doctor’s interpretation of my personality, mental and physical health. I still have no idea how it works, but the results were scarily accurate and some of the personality traits (both positive and negative) definitely struck close to home. Like the Blood Analysis, the results help form a broader picture of your health and areas for improvement.

Finally, I spent some time in the Vital Dome infra-red sauna. A strange experience as you lie down, in a dimly lit room with peaceful music playing, covered by the dome with just your head out. On the “detox” setting, the heat went up to 65º C, sending my heart racing and letting my body sweat out the toxins. I’m still trying to decide whether it felt like a relaxing meditation or an intense workout. Yes, very conflicting concepts, but I would absolutely do it again

Healing Sanctuary Spa And Aqua Sanctuary

No retreat would be complete without a visit (or two or three!) to the spa and the Healing Sanctuary and Aqua Sanctuary did not disappoint. I tried the signature Purification Treatment which was a simply divine combination body scrub and massage.

Next up was Aqua Therapy, a two-hour onsen-like experience. The time was spent being guided from the saunas and steam rooms through different water jets and onsen pools, before finishing up with an infrared foot sauna and shoulder massage. It was relaxing and meditative and something I’d highly recommend.

There is a range of rooms, suites and villas to suit your style. My room was a Banaba Deluxe in the newest section of the resort. It is near a new section of the resort that is being constructed (with exciting things to come!) and a bit of a walk to the main areas so if I were to stay again I’d look into the villas which enjoy a private garden and some with their own pools.

Find out what different Team Sassy members plan to eat this week…

We all need to eat, and we know what to feed our bodies to stay in top form. But with so much on our plates, it’s a challenge to come up with three balanced and nutritional meals each day, let alone find the time to buy all the ingredients and turn them into tasty dishes.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner should really be times of the day that we look forward to, but even if we enjoy the act of eating, having to think of what to cook (or even what food to have delivered to our homes) can be a chore. This is where meal plans come in handy. With a simple click of a button, you can have ready-to-eat dishes delivered straight to your door or office for free (in biodegradable packaging no less!).

NOSH: Healthy Meal Plan Delivery

NOSH offers a variety of dietitian-approved meal plans to suit different preferences, nutrition goals and dietary requirements (allergen exclusion options are available which will be produced from a separate production line). What’s more, each calorie-controlled meal is thoughtfully designed by the service’s in-house chefs to ensure you receive balanced meals without any additives or preservatives. Read on to find out which meal plan different members of our team would pick and which dishes they’re most excited to try.

NOSH: Get Lean Meal Plan

NOSH Get Lean, From $337/Day

Jess’s Pick

Why this meal plan?

I’ve been working on my fitness goals for a while now, and while I’ve got the exercise part sorted, where I fall short is committing to healthy eating. I like that the Classic NOSH menu has a “Get Lean” option (options include Balanced Diet, Build Muscle, Vegetarian, Flexitarian, Keto and more) that can help me stay on track with a high protein and low carb diet. Plus, now that there’s the option to purchase 30 and 40-day packages, I can more easily stick to my healthy eating goals over the summer.

What excites you from the menu?

The first thing that struck me about the week’s menu was the variety. Premium ingredients such as GMO-free chicken, grass-fed beef and sustainably harvested fish all make appearances on the lunch and dinner menus, with savoury and sweeter options alternating for breakfast (think Banana Almond Chia-Seeds Pudding and Southwest Turkey and Egg Breakfast Bowl). I’m most looking forward to trying the Tandoori Salmon Salad with Mint Chutney Dressing for lunch and the Peri Peri Pulled Pork with Herb-Roasted Sweet Potato & Succotash for dinner.

NOSH: Flexi Meal Plan

NOSH Flexi, From $268/Day

Nicole’s Pick

Why this meal plan?

I think it’s great that NOSH introduced a flexitarian option to Hong Kong that allows people to try a mostly plant-based diet with some animal products. I enjoy most vegetables and am a big fan of tofu and soy products, but I do crave meat every now and then. I’m also a firm believer that variety is the spice of life, so it’s great to know that the team have created over 100 new dishes this year to ensure I’d never get bored with the menu.

What excites you from the menu?

It was great to see that NOSH has partnered with plant-based chicken brand TiNDLE to create the Flexi menu as I like to substitute meat where I can. I’m pleased to see dishes like Paneer Butter Masala, Lamb Kebab with Moroccan Spiced Vegetables and Chicken Jambalaya with Mixed Peppers. Usually when you think of healthy meal plans, you don’t expect much in the flavour department, but these dishes look like they pack a punch!

NOSH: Veggie Meal Plan

NOSH Veggie, From $230/Day

Fashila’s Pick

Why this meal plan?

Although I’m not vegetarian, I like to go veggie when I can — there’s something about having a colourful plate that excites your palate (eat your greens, and reds and yellows and purples)! And, coming from South India where we have a variety of vegetarian dishes, veggie definitely doesn’t mean boring and NOSH further attests to that (and come on, how amazing does a warm spiced couscous salad sound?).

What excites you from the menu?

That it’s more than just Impossible meat and boiled vegetables! From Vietnamese Lemongrass Tofu with Brown Rice to Truffle and Beets & Burrata Salad with Balsamic Honey Dijon Balsamic Vinaigrette, NOSH Veggie features flavourful dishes inspired from countries around the globe so no two meals are the same. And as a rice-dependent life form, seeing at least one wholesome rice dish a day has me grinning from ear to ear!

Whether for health or environmental reasons, many have made it a goal to try and eat less meat and incorporate more plant-based foods in their diet. Easier said than done? NOSH’s brand new Flexitarian meal plan offers a convenient option that provides you more flexibility instead of needing to stick with a strict diet, without having to cut out all animal products cold turkey.

The first of its kind in Hong Kong, the NOSH Flexi meal plan comprises a mostly vegetarian menu with some meat in moderation – perfect for those looking to have a more flexible lifestyle and healthy diet.

NOSH Flexitarian Meal Plan: Couscous
