How To Meditate And Practice Mindfulness On Your Own

A good place to start is simply to focus on your breath. Follow these simple steps and you’ll soon be on your way to a calmer and happier you.

• Find a quiet spot to sit down. A cushion or a chair is great especially if your back needs extra support.
• Set a timer for a specified time. Start with five minutes and slowly build your way up to 20 minutes. Having a set amount of time will help your mind to settle.
• Place your palms comfortably on your lap or on your knees and allow your eyes to close.
• Take a moment to make sure your body is completely relaxed. Check your forehead, jaw and shoulders for tension and release any you might be holding on to.
• Notice your breath moving in and out of the body. Feel how your body rises as you inhale and how it falls as you exhale.
• Begin to notice the pauses between the breaths — at the start of an inhale and at the end of an exhale. Try to lengthen those pauses.
• When a thought pops into your mind, acknowledge it and allow it to drift away. It sometimes makes it easier to imagine your thoughts like clouds and visualise them simply drifting away.
• Continue to focus on your breath until the timer goes off.
• A nice way to end your meditation is to think of a few things you’re grateful for — big things, little things, anything that fills you up with love. Let that feeling of gratitude flow through your whole body and then open your eyes.

Whether it’s junk boat parties, lazy beach days, hiking adventures, or simply dashing through the city in the scorching heat, your skin sure cops it during the warmer months! SkinCentral, a leading Hong Kong cosmetic and medical dermatology clinic, has been helping Sassy Girls keep their skin in top condition since 2005. We sat down with SkinCentral’s team of professionals to ask all our burning questions about skin safety.

SPF 15, 30, 50? What’s the difference and what should we look for in a sunscreen? Is it ok to rely on SPF in our make-up?

SPF stands for sun protection factor. It measures how well the sunscreen can protect you from UVB. It represents how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to produce sunburn on protected skin (in the presence of sunscreen!) relative to the amount of solar energy required to produce sunburn on unprotected skin.

It is commonly believed that SPF is a time factor for sun exposure. Actually, SPF does not inform consumers about the time that can be spent in the sun without getting sunburned.

It is used to compare the level of sunburn protection provided by different sunscreens. In simple terms, SPF 50 provides better protection than SPF 30.

You can not just rely on the SPF in the make-up. Theoretically, for sunscreen to have a protective effect, you need to apply an adequate amount, a thick layer over the skin. The content of SPF in makeup is simply not high enough.

You’d need to put on tons of makeup in order to provide the adequate protection that regular sunscreen would provide.

Help…. I forgot to reapply my sunscreen and now I look like a glowing red beacon. Is there anything I can do?

In the hours and days following you can:

• Take cool baths or showers to relieve the pain
• Gently pat dry and apply a layer of moisturizer
• Drink plenty of water to cool down and prevent dehydration
• Do not pop the blisters
• Take painkillers
• Cover sunburnt skin from direct sunlight until the skin has fully healed

The long-term effects of sunburn include premature ageing, precancerous skin lesions (actinic keratosis) and the increased risk of skin cancer, including both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. These effects could take decades to develop and the only thing you can do is to avoid further sunburn and sun damage.

Who is more at risk of developing skin cancer?

Factors that affect your risk of developing skin cancer include genetics, skin type (especially fair-skinned people), sun exposure and a history of sunburn and those undergoing immuno-suppressive treatment are generally at higher risk for skin cancer. But that doesn’t mean we all shouldn’t be taking precautions!

Skin cancer is more likely to develop in areas of skin exposed to the sun which includes the scalp, face, neck, nose, chest, arms and hands.

It’s important not to get complacent as non sun-exposed areas like your palms, fingernails, toenails or even your genital areas have been known to develop skin cancers. For people with darker skin tones, melanoma is actually more likely to occur in these areas which are not normally exposed to the sun.

What are some of the warning signs we should look out for?

Dermatologists usually look out for:

• Changes to the size, shape, structure or colour of a naevus (commonly called moles)
• Particular naevus that looks different from others on the body
• A new naevus developing in adult life (over the age of 40)
• ABCD characteristics — Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter > 6 mm

Who should book a skin cancer check?

Skin safety is important for everyone! If you’ve never had a check, or it’s been a long time since your last skin exam you might want to consider visiting a dermatologist to establish your baseline. Some people should be booking in for regular checks, dermoscopy or biopsy and that includes those with; many moles (more than 100), large moles (especially if they are unusually coloured or shaped), moles that are difficult to see and monitor (like on your back), a personal or family history of melanoma and those with a history of severe or repeated sunburn.

So, the question we all want to know — how much time in the sun is too much?

The time taken to have sunburn depends on several factors. It can vary by skin type, the weather and the time of day. On a hot sunny day, if you have fair skin, it could take just 5 minutes to start getting sunburn!

What is the one piece of advice you’d give to women to stay skin-safe this summer?

Prevention is the best thing you can do to save your skin.

Cover up by wearing a hat, long sleeves and a long skirt or trousers. Choose fabrics designed for the sun (UPF 40+) when outdoors.

Wear sunscreen! Choose a broad-spectrum high-protection (SPF 50+) sunscreen and apply it frequently to exposed areas.

Gong & Sound Healing Baths

Be bathed in sound waves from hypnotic instruments. Gong baths are an ancient form of music meditation that is thought to date back thousands of years. This alternative therapy works on the theory that the noise and vibrations lower your brainwaves’ frequency, helping your mind slow down, focus, clear and become more in tune with your own energy.

You’ll lay on the floor with your eyes closed while a practitioner gently hits a gong. It may start with a gong sitting at the front of the room, followed by the practitioner holding the gong (or other instruments) over your head and other areas of your body to allow the vibrations to take effect. Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a huge all-encompassing alternative therapy with many branches and a very long history. The main principle behind TCM is treating the body as a whole, including when diagnosing and treating an illness. TCM believes that prevention is the best cure.

TCM diagnosis is as intensive as the prescription and involves looking, listening, smelling (yep), questions and checking the pulse. Therapies include acupuncture, moxibustion (the burning of burning dried mugwort on certain points on the body), tui na massage, cupping and/or scraping, Chinese herbs and more.

What Makes °CRYO Hong Kong Different?

We were welcomed into an inviting space high up in One Chinachem Central, with ceiling-to-floor windows that overlook the city, providing a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of below. There were a few nerves trying out such innovative treatments, but the airy and sleek interiors were calming rather than intimidating. We also made note of the aesthetically-pleasing neon signage accompanying the cryotherapy chamber — very Hong Kong!

Before The Treatment

My visit started by filling out an incredibly comprehensive form that let me note down my intended goals and any conditions (like infections and injuries) and former treatments that could interfere with or impact my experience (like microblading, laser hair removal, tattoos and piercings and so on). I was particularly concerned about skin allergies, as I suffer from chronic urticaria, but the manager assured me that as long as my condition wasn’t cold-triggered, the sub-zero temperature would actually be fine!

Alongside full-body cryotherapy, °CRYO Hong Kong offers localised cryotherapy and °CRYO facials, deep cleansing and pore-refining HydraFacials, facials in collaboration with cult favourite skincare brand SkinCeuticals (including brightening, customisable, and anti-glycation varieties), slimming, cellulite-targetted and muscle-toning treatments, compression therapy, red-light therapy, an infrared dry sauna and more.

The Signature Full-Body Cryotherapy Treatment

Once sorted out, I was given a soft and cosy bra and short co-ord and long thigh-high socks, and the choice between a beanie or ear muffs to protect the sensitive top part of my ear, plus moon boots and long gloves. I also made sure to remove my nose ring.

The fully-immersive chamber is definitely intimidating at first glance but feels bigger than it appears once you step inside. The door is just a simple push to open and is never locked. I trialled the “first-time” option, a two-minute guided session at -121°C. Surprisingly, it didn’t feel too cold! I moved a little bit to pass the time, and found the helpful energetic voiceover really put me at ease. My eyes are quite sensitive, so I simply closed them and covered them with my gloved hands.

Red Light Therapy

This is a non-invasive full-chamber treatment that exposes your body to red and near-infrared light to relieve pain, repair muscle tissue and accelerate recovery. In particular, clients have reported back improvement with conditions like arthritis and even their eyesight! It also stimulates collagen production.

The light is completely safe but super bright, so I closed my eyes and used the dark glasses provided for comfort. The chamber doesn’t close fully and is easy to push open should you wish. It didn’t feel claustrophobic, which was my major concern! This treatment was quite calming, not too hot or warm, especially after the cold treatment.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Perhaps the most interesting treatment, you head inside a chamber with a nasal cannula device that saturates your body with oxygen. This therapy promotes body healing, helping it to repair skin cells, regenerate new tissue, increase blood flow and improve circulation — strengthening your body from the inside out. It also helps you maintain mental sharpness and fight infection.

Final Thoughts

My most-anticipated treatment was the signature cryotherapy, as I had knee surgery over a year ago and am still in the process of rehabilitating it. Known for accelerating muscle recovery and relieving pain, as well as reducing stress and fatigue and improving sleep, the sub-zero temperature therapy was an enjoyable experience that was very soothing for my knee joint. You’d have to book a couple of sessions for full results, but overall I’d say it’s energising, stress-relieving and great for muscle pain.

But alas, the cannabinoid product compound is set to be banned in Hong Kong starting Wednesday, 1 February, 2023.

With the impending ban on CBD in Hong Kong, we’ve seen the closure of a number of local cafes offering CBD-infused food and drink like Found, and other physical shops and online business selling CBD products. Is CBD Legal In Hong Kong?

As of Wednesday, 1 February, 2023, CBD will officially be banned in Hong Kong. The cannabis-derived substance will be prohibited under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and as such, possession and consumption of CBD will be subject to up to 7 years’ imprisonment and a $1 million fine.

The transporting of CBD for sale (including both import and export), will also be illegal.

What Is CBD?

CBD is one of the 104 known compounds in the cannabinoids group. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not have any psychoactive effects. This means that CBD won’t make you “high”. The oil is made from different parts of a mature hemp plant (everything from its stalks to its flowers).

Is CBD The Same As Cannabis?

No, CBD is not the same as cannabis or marijuana. Though both come from the same family, the two plants they originate from are very different.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD works through the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in our body to generate encocannabinoids and process phytocannabinoids. This helps us return to homeostasis (which is the stable norm we’re constantly ebbing and flowing from). CBD combines with the body to adjust our stress response. It’s known as an adaptogen because it adapts uniquely to you.
