What To Watch This September 2023

GAMERA -Rebirth- – Airs Thursday, 7 September on Netflix Hong Kong.

Those who are familiar with Kaiju (Japanese giant monster-related media – think Godzilla) will probably already be fans of Gamera, the iconic monster created back in the 1960s and which debuted in a series of films in Japan. It returns in Netflix’s latest animated series, facing off against enemy creatures across six episodes.

Just in time for the back-to-school season, “How to Date Billy Walsh” is a cute young adult rom-com about childhood best friends Amelia and Archie as they navigate high school together, and Amelia falling for Billy, the American exchange student and new resident bad boy.


Burning Body – Airs Friday, 8 September on Netflix Hong Kong

Úrsula Corberó, most famous for her role as Tokyo in Netflix’s “Money Heist”, leads its newest Spanish crime-drama. When the charred body of Pedro, a police officer, is found inside a car in Barcelona, the investigation reveals a series of toxic relationships between Pedro, his partner Rosa, and her ex-boyfriend Albert.

Love at First Sight – Airs Friday, 15 September on Netflix Hong Kong

Based on Casey McQuiston’s young adult bestseller, Red, White and Royal Blue, follows Alex Claremont-Diaz, son of the United States President (played by Uma Thurman) and his rivalry with the British royal family’s Prince Harry. What ensues is a classic hate-turns-into-love story between the two young men, as their reluctant friendship turns into something more.

Shelter

Prolific thriller writer, Harlan Coben, returns with another nail-biting mystery this summer. Shelter is the story of Mickey Bolitar and his move to Kasselton, New Jersey, after the sudden death of his father. Mickey finds himself caught up in the disappearance of a new student at his school, leading to the discovery of shocking secrets within their community.

Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action version of the iconic manga/anime series hits the platform at the end of the month. Protagonist Monkey D. Set across seven countries, this gripping documentary series from RAW uses powerful archives to reconstruct the night of the disappearance, along with three of the most contentious theories about the plane’s disappearance.

16 lone wolves take part in this reality competition set in Alaska (the land of ice, bears and eagles), where they must outlast each other in the wilderness in an attempt to win one million dollars. If you like mythologies, or rather, alternative takes on classics, this one’s for you. “Shahmaran” is a Turkish fantasy drama chronicling around the ancient myth of the same name. Traditionally half snake and half woman, this series features Sahsu (the human version of Shahmaran) who seeks to find and confront her estranged grandfather. But soon, she finds herself in the midst of a legend.
